U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that immigration agents operating in Minneapolis will begin using body-worn cameras following calls for greater accountability after recent fatal shootings.
Noem stated that the rollout will begin immediately in the city and will expand nationwide once funding becomes available. She indicated that the measure is intended to strengthen transparency in DHS operations.
The decision follows two fatal incidents in January in which federal agents shot and killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Videos recorded by witnesses have raised questions about the official accounts provided after the events.
DHS confirmed that in Pretti’s case, body camera footage exists from several agents, while in the Good incident, part of the encounter was recorded by the agent using a mobile phone.
Noem emphasized that the goal is to quickly acquire and deploy body cameras for all DHS agents nationwide as funding permits.
Federal agents’ actions in Minneapolis have sparked protests and public criticism, intensifying debate over immigration enforcement methods.
